: I read this book as a sourcebook, specifically for a novel I wrote, in which one of the main characters gives away most of his jewelry, including one piece of pure silver that is nearly priceless. So, what the heck did they wear? This book gives answers and illustrations.
A good example of what this book supplies is the photograph of an armlet designed to be worn on the upper arm. Those pieces had a flat extension of gold (or whatever metal) extending up toward the armpit, which helped to anchor the piece. Since most of us nowadays don’t wear such pieces, it’s good to know, and I was able to describe it.
Sourcebooks like this one are very valuable for research, since they satisfy the need for verbal information and for visual information. This book makes a splendid coffee table book, too, and the author’s style is engaging and interesting.

: I would encourage anyone to seek out a copy of this book, it is well worth a few extra dollars considering it’s out of print. The photos are exceptionally rich in color and detail, all fully labeled with dates and names. As someone looking to recreate jewelry in the style of ancient Egypt, this book has been my top resource on so many levels. It lists the multitude of stones and minerals used by ancient Egyptian craftsmen, along with the tools and techniques they practiced. The contents and sections are very well organized and easy to follow, and it includes a complete index for quick reference. This book is a treasure all its own!

: I happened upon this book while visiting the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, and it is well worth every penny. Copious full color photographs illustrate the many types of jewelry worn by the Ancient Egyptians, both in life and as funerary pieces. Manufacturing techniques are also discussed somewhat, and the Egyptian names for items are also provided. This superb reference is not only a great replacement for the out-of-print “Jewels of the Pharaohs” by Cyril Aldred, it surpasses this earlier work by providing much more detail and information.

: I recall seeing this “Ancient Egyptian Jewelry” book in our library (I work in a museum). I coveted it for years but simply couldn’t find it. It’s an old book, but hey, its about ancient Egyptian jewelry (3000 BCE)! The images are good reproductions, quite large and easily read; the pieces themselves are just superb. You can but wonder at the truly incredible ability of the artisans who created these works. The book itself has adequate information, and the paper and style of the book are fine.

Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world – but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology.
